The Perks of Being a Mind-Wanderer

American Poet Walt Witman once said: "If you want to know where your heart is, look to where your mind goes when it wanders." His words speak to the essence of a wide-spread human cognitive phenomenon that has sparked plenty of philosophical and psychological debate, mind-wandering. Mind-wandering can operationally be described as an internal state where attention drifts from the immediate task or environment, and has been estimated to occupy from a third to half of our waking thoughts. The topic has sparked diverse perspectives of its nature, though most agree that mind-wandering is a process of conscious mentation: When the mind wanders, what wanders is the stream of consciousness. The content of mind-wandering spans a spectrum from mundane concerns to elaborate fantasies, influenced by individual traits and contextual factors. While traditionally viewed as a lapse in focus or productivity, recent research has begun to reframe mind wandering as a potentially adaptive and beneficial cognitive process. Those who view mind-wandering in a positive light highlight its potential adaptive functions, such as fostering creativity, problem-solving, and planning. Conversely, critics emphasize its potential downsides, including diminished task performance, increased error rates, and links to negative emotional states, such as rumination or anxiety. These contrasting views illuminate the duality of the phenomenon, with evidence suggesting it may be both a cognitive asset and a disruptive liability.
At the forefront of the meta-physical discussion are philosophers Joshua Shepherd and Zachary Irving, each of whom have well-known positions on the origins and purpose of mind wandering. Both Irving and Shepherd are renowned scholars and philosophers specializing in the philosophy of mind and cognitive science. The arguments presented in Irving’s “Mind Wandering is unguided attention: accounting for the purposeful wanderer”, combined with those presented in Shepherd’s “Why does the mind wander?” from the Neuroscience of Consciousness, provide a thoughtful survey of contrasting theories describing the nature of mind wandering. The present inquiry is a comparative analysis of the positions of Shepherd and Irving regarding the initiation, purpose/dynamics and utility of mind-wandering. This study contributes to the growing conversation on mind-wandering, aiming to determine whether the phenomenon should be embraced as a valuable cognitive phenomenon, or treated as a distraction to be minimized or prevented.
Initiation
The initiation of mind-wandering is often contested, with some researchers suggesting it is a largely spontaneous process, while others posit that it can be triggered or deliberate, perhaps as a mental escape or a means to manage stress.
Zachary Irving views the initiation of mind-wandering episodes as predominantly spontaneous and rooted in the brain’s intrinsic activity. He argues that mind-wandering is not a deliberate process but rather an emergent phenomenon where thoughts arise without explicit intention. This spontaneity is driven by the brain’s natural propensity to generate and explore associative thought patterns. He suggests that the brain’s default activity inherently seeks novelty and tasks, leading to episodes of unguided and unrelated mentation.
On the other hand, Shepherd proposes that the initiation of mind-wandering is grounded in cognitive control theory. Cognitive control refers to the collective top-down mental processes through which the human cognition system configures itself to regulate attention, thought, and task related behavior. This includes appropriate adjustments in perceptual selection, response biasing and the on-line maintenance of contextual information. Shepherd argues that mind-wandering is not purely spontaneous, but emerges from a cost-benefit analysis performed by the cognitive control system, which subconsciously assesses the value of continuing to engage in a current task versus the potential rewards of shifting attention to other thoughts or goals. If the perceived rewards of the task at hand are insufficient compared to alternative mental activities, the mind disengages and begins to wander. Shepherd’s model, the Cognitive Control Theory, aligns with the well-cited Expected Value of Control (EVOC) theory, which posits that the cognitive system is designed to maximize rewards by allocating mental effort where it is most beneficial.
Shepherd focuses specifically on unintentional mind wandering: episodes of mind wandering that are neither initiated nor governed by any reportable intention of the agent, and which can be prompted by both external and internal stimuli. According to Shepherd, unintentional mind-wandering is caused by the cognitive control system precisely when the expected value of whatever the agent is doing is deemed too low, and this judgement generates a search for a better goal or task. This process often feels spontaneous but may be influenced both by the nature of the current task, and the urgency of alternative thoughts, such as anxious sentiments or plans, goals and desires.
Purpose and Dynamics
Irving defends the view that mind-wandering is inherently purposeless. He draws closely on two primary distinctions essential to describing the dynamics of mind-wandering: guidance vs. motivation, and ongoing vs. occurrent tasks.
Guidance vs. Motivation: Irving states: “Whereas guidance concerns how thoughts unfold over time, motivation concerns their causal antecedents. Motivated thoughts are caused by the agent’s beliefs and desires/goals. My solution to the puzzle is this, mind wandering is never guided- which is why it is purposeless- but is frequently motivated- which is why our minds wander to our goals.”. In his argument, motivated behaviors are those in which their causal antecedents include the agent’s beliefs, desires and goals, while guided behavior simply involves the online monitoring and regulation of behavior. He argues that while wandering may be motivated, “they are not monitored or regulated in the right way to count as guided.” (Irving, 2015)
Ongoing vs. Occurrent Tasks: He also emphatically distinguishes between ongoing and occurrent tasks. He maintains that ongoing tasks are overarching, long-term goals or concerns that persist in the background of a person’s mental landscape, often involving broader life objectives, unresolved problems, or creative pursuits. Occurrent tasks,on the other hand, are immediate and specific activities requiring focused attention, such as solving a math problem, having a conversation, or navigating traffic. These tasks demand cognitive control to sustain performance and typically involve clear goals and constraints. Irving argues that mind-wandering is mentation unrelated to any of the subject’s occurrent tasks, which he argues accounts for the empirical evidence of the causal antecedents of mind-wandering: mind-wandering often represents a shift in attention from occurrent tasks to ongoing tasks.
He also highlights the unstable dynamics of mind-wandering, in that mind-wandering is defined by its tendency to transition from one idea to another. He states that when the mind wanders, attention drifts unguided from one topic to the next, in contrast with fixed or ruminative thoughts, and often are motivated by or relating to on-going tasks. While mind-wandering might involve complex dynamics, it is an inherently purposeless state of unguided attention.
Shepherd’s view emphasizes the importance of the cognitive control system in mediating the occurrence and dynamics of mind-wandering. When the cognitive control system disengages from an immediate task due to low perceived value, mind-wandering may redirect attention to other goals or thoughts that the system deems more rewarding or significant. The content of mind-wandering may be influenced by a variety of factors, including mood, personal goals, and situational context, suggesting that the mind tends to wander toward thoughts that align with an individual's current emotional state or motivational priorities.
In a positive mood, the mind may gravitate toward optimistic or creative scenarios, while in a negative mood, it might dwell on worries or unresolved problems. This mood-congruent pattern reflects how emotional states shape the mental associations and goals that become salient during episodes of mind-wandering. Additionally, Shepherd emphasizes that personal goals play a significant role in directing the content of mind-wandering, suggesting some general agreement with Irving that the mind often revisits unresolved or high-priority goals (i.e. ongoing tasks) when the current task lacks immediate demands.
Shepherd argues that mind-wandering episodes are sometimes short and may stop because we feel a pull to return to our recent task. His theory explains that the return to task-related thoughts simply reflects the natural progression of the cognitive control system through potential alternative thoughts. In the case of failure to find a more rewarding task or goal, the system returns to the previous task. Shepherd argues against Irving, asking that when the mind circles back to an agent’s task,”does that not suggest guidance of some sort?”. Shepherd asserts that the wandering mind is subconsciously guided from one thought to another, and then potentially back to the occurent goal because the search for cognitive engagement and reward is what initiated and governed the episode to begin with.
According to Shepherd, mind-wandering feels purposeless, not because it lacks a function, but because it is a fascinating case of agency, or lack thereof, in which we do not notice that a non-conscious mechanism has turned the stream of consciousness in a different direction. The “meandering” experience of mind-wandering behind its perceived purposelessness may actually be the act of searching itself, and resolves when the cognitive control system is engaged and rewarded.
Utility
While Irving’s argument has many strengths, it does not provide a clear proposal of its utility, primarily, because he firmly maintains the purposelessness of the phenomenon. While he concedes that the shift from occurrent to ongoing tasks can at times be adaptive, he principally treats the wandering mind as a distraction. While a natural human tendency, mind wandering, in itself, is not reflective of regulated cognitive activity. It is a spontaneous and unguided shift in attention, characterized by a lack of agency returning an individual to occurrent goals. He finds that mind-wandering is primarily disruptive to the progression or completion of an occurring task.
It is Shepherd's argument that provides the most compelling argument for the value of mind-wandering. He maintains that an unintentional mental episode need not imply maladaptation, or lack of function. His theory of cognitive control indicates that mind wandering may be distracting in one sense and adaptive in another, but inherently has the potential to boost cognitive output. His evidence comes from citations of research by Kane and McVay demonstrating that:
When task demands are high, individuals with a greater working memory capacity (WMC) tend to have fewer task unrelated thoughts.
When task demands are low, individuals with a greater WMC tend to have more task unrelated thoughts.
Individuals with a high WMC may mind-wander more in less demanding tasks, and this is actually associated with fewer performance decrements on these same tasks.
The evidence demonstrates a strong correlation between the frequency and degree to which the mind-wanders and the engagement and demands of a task. The cognitive control governing mind-wandering proves to be individualistic and situational, with those who possess more cognitive control mind wandering at more strategic times. This adaptability supports Shepherd’s claims, suggesting that cognitive control not only initiates mind-wandering through rational cost-benefit computations, but also moderates its occurrence based on situational requirements.
Shepherd views mind-wandering as a strategic and context-sensitive process, rather than a purely uncontrolled phenomenon. He argues that: “if one gets stuck on a difficult goal, or if it becomes apparent that the present goal is not as rewarding as once calculated, it is much wiser to disengage and seek a better goal.”, proposing that there are conditions in which mind-wandering is the productive process to engage in (Shepherd, 2019). For example, if a journalist is experiencing writer’s block, it may actually prove more efficient for the cognitive control system to disengage and seek out alternatively rewarding thoughts than to remain blocked. In this case, mind-wandering could contribute to progression and completion of the occurrent goal. After allowing the mind to explore alternative thoughts, the journalist may be more productive in their original task. Engaging in cognitive exploration may give the mind the stamina required to approach the original challenge.
Conclusion
Mind-wandering, often dismissed as a cognitive distraction, holds considerable potential as an adaptive and beneficial mental process. Instead of being a failure of cognitive control, the mind-wander may actually be utilizing a natural cognitive tool. Consistent with Shepherd’s theories on the initiation, purpose/dynamics and utility of mind wandering, the present analysis makes the following predictions of the value and operational use of mind-wandering in practice:
When the mind wanders, it engages in dynamic, associative thinking that engages the cognitive control system to guide attention from one alternative thought to another. This engagement can act as a workout for the brain, keeping it active and adaptive, even when it seems unproductive on the surface.
During mind-wandering, the transition between thoughts and ideas may be sufficient cognitive activity to prime the brain for focused thinking and problem solving. It may also provide the mind with an opportunity to replenish itself, leading to a refreshed cognitive state that can enhance task performance by increasing precision and efficiency upon re-engagement with the original task.
Shepherd’s cognitive control theory provides a novel approach to the phenomenon of mind-wandering, one which highlights its potential to enable creative problem-solving, emotional processing and self-reflection. While Irving’s arguments contribute to the growing understanding of the potential origins and dynamics of mind-wandering, it lacks a significant argument against its utility, suggesting that the phenomenon may be more versatile and advantageous than once imagined.
By allowing the mind to disengage and search for rewarding work when the immediate demands are unfulfilling, mind-wandering—whether in the form of diverse ideas, imaginings, brainstorming or planning—can serve as a powerful tool for innovation and insight. The present analysis maintains that with continued research, mind-wandering may have a place in therapeutic intervention and mindfulness techniques. Understanding how to harness and guide mind-wandering in strategic ways—such as through periods of deliberate rest or reflection—can maximize its benefits and promote enhanced cognitive output. In practice, mind-wandering need not be a lapse in productivity, but a dynamic mechanism to boost efficiency. As research into its functions and mechanisms continues to grow, incorporating mind-wandering into routines and practices may prove to unlock new avenues for human potential and cognitive growth.
